Join our latest citizen science project to gather crucial data on the abundance and seasonality of eagle rays in the Bay Islands! As a dive professional, your experience is priceless. Share your sightings and contribute to vital research on their numbers and seasonality.

Every dive counts!

About the Initiative

This initiative builds on the success of our photo-ID program, which has yielded valuable insights into how many unique rays we have and how often they visit our islands.  By documenting unique individuals through photographs, we have tracked their recurring sightings at various locations.

However, our current photo-id data lacks the depth needed to understand seasonal variations and understand the true numbers of eagle rays throughout the year. Gaining insight into these patterns is essential for identifying potential migration routes, habitat preferences, and environmental factors that influence their presence.

To fill this knowledge gap, we are harnessing citizen science by collaborating with dive professionals who spend considerable time underwater and can provide ongoing, real-time observations. Together, we can gather systematic, long-term data that will inform key research questions and enhance conservation efforts for eagle rays in Roatan.

Integrating Citizen Science into Dive Operations

Pre-Dive Briefings

First Raysponders will introduce Ilili’s initiatives to divers, highlighting how they can contribute to shark and ray conservation through citizen science efforts.

Photo Contribution Drive

Divers will be encouraged to document their encounters with eagle rays during dives and submit their photos to Ilili’s database via our project website.

Post-Dive Data Collection

First Raysponders will gather essential details after each dive, including the date, dive site, time of day, water depth, and the number of eagle rays observed.
